A set of points failing to complete its movement, an encrusted contact wire causing the pantograph to spark, or a platform turning into a slippery sheet of ice are enough to slow down traffic and often bring it to a standstill. Passenger and freight trains queue up, while maintenance teams rush to the tracks with shovels and salt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those managing or maintaining a network, avoiding these disruptions is, first and foremost, a matter of <strong>reliability and safety<\/strong>. In the railway sector, we work with Italian companies, such as RFI and FERROVIENORD, alongside international operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article, we look at how the entire infrastructure is defended against frost, from the turnouts and power supply to the stations themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mapping the route: the first step in railway frost protection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A single frozen spot can cripple an entire line<\/strong>, as delays ripple from one train to the next, and <strong>safety systems halt traffic <\/strong>whenever an asset fails to respond as expected. This is why every project begins with an assessment of the route, identifying the most exposed areas and taking the local climate into account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This leads to targeted choices, establishing <strong>where heating is essential <\/strong>and where it would merely be a waste of energy. With frequent frosts, for instance, turnouts in the open countryside have different requirements compared to those sheltered within a station or tunnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Frost protection for turnouts and points<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Railway points<\/strong> take precedence when it comes to installing <strong>frost protection<\/strong>. Their operation relies on the sliding of two movable switch rails, which shift sideways to route the train and rest against the adjacent fixed element, called the stock rail. Once the switch rail fits perfectly against it, a detection system confirms its position, and the green light is given for the train to pass. Therefore, should frost or precipitation cause a layer of snow or ice to compact within the mechanism, this could be enough to block the line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rete Ferroviaria Italiana\u2019s technical specifications for <strong>turnout heating<\/strong> make it mandatory to protect both the switch rails and the stock rails, particularly in the area where the two rails close together. A heating cable is secured along the rail using dedicated clips, and the metal conducts the heat to the area where the switch rail moves, keeping it above freezing even on the coldest nights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other applications for railway frost protection in stations and technical rooms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/parmast.com\/en\/heating-cables\/antifreeze\/\"><strong>anti-freeze heating cable<\/strong><\/a><strong> system <\/strong>can also counteract adverse winter conditions on <strong>platforms <\/strong>and along passenger walkways. Installed beneath the paving, they keep <strong>footpaths<\/strong>, ramps, and access <strong>stairs <\/strong>clear. On canopies, meanwhile, they prevent gutters and downpipes from clogging and discharging flows or sheets of ice onto the pavements below. The very same solutions protect exposed <strong>water and fire-fighting pipes<\/strong> from freezing, which, if ruptured, would leave the system out of service at the worst possible moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>technical rooms<\/strong>, housing power supplies and signalling equipment, the main risk is water ingress. Here, <a href=\"https:\/\/parmast.com\/en\/leak-detection\/water\/\"><strong>water leak detection<\/strong><\/a> systems are installed to provide an early warning of a leak or rupture before it can reach the electrical devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technologies used: heating cables and automatic control<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For railway frost protection systems, both <a href=\"https:\/\/parmast.com\/en\/self-regulating-or-constant-wattage-heating-cable\/\"><strong>self-regulating<\/strong><\/a> and <strong>constant wattage<\/strong> <strong>heating cable<\/strong> technologies can be utilised. The former is suited to sections of the track most exposed to significant temperature fluctuations, as it adapts to temperature changes. The latter, featuring <strong>constant wattage mineral-insulated<\/strong> elements where the conductor is protected by a metal sheath, consumes less energy and performs exceptionally well even at several degrees below zero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In both cases, the system is paired with a <strong>control panel that activates the cables only when necessary<\/strong>, using dedicated sensors to detect cold conditions and the presence of snow or moisture. On the RFI network, the system\u2019s status and any faults are transmitted remotely to the traffic control centre, allowing operators to know in real time if a section has been left unprotected.
